Chip Technology

BMO Match Card® debit and credit cards are more secure than ever, thanks to advanced chip technology. These cards feature an encrypted microchip that is incredibly difficult to counterfeit, and your personal identification number (PIN) adds an extra layer of protection.

BMO Match Card® chip card technology has been successfully tested and implemented in over 92 countries across Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. The move to chip card technology marks an important evolution in the electronic payment system. It is designed to elevate security, ensuring that an already secure payment system becomes even safer.

BMO Match Card®, together with other leaders in the payments industry, has been at the forefront of the shift to chip card technology in Canada. To enhance the security of your personal information and in-branch transactions, BMO Match Card® has equipped all of its branches with chip & PIN terminals.

Canadian and U.S. stores and services will be equipped with terminals that process chip transactions over the next few years. All chip cards will continue to have a magnetic stripe on the back of the card. This ensures that you’ll still be able to use your BMO Match Card at merchants who don’t have chip terminals and in countries that have not yet adopted chip technology.

When you shop online and see the Visa Secure badge on participating merchant sites, it means your online purchases are secured with Visa. Visa has developed a program that helps confirm your identity during online purchases, providing enhanced protection against unauthorized use of your BMO Match Card.

Whether you’re using a desktop, mobile, or other digital devices, you may be guided through an additional check to verify your identity. This process helps BMO Match Card ensure that it’s really you making the purchase, offering better protection against fraud.
